Spirit of Belron Challenge Event weekend raises €1 million
29 September 2016
The Spirit of Belron Challenge 2016 event took place on Friday 23 September and Saturday 24 September. The event kicked off with a festival and a Guinness World Records™ attempt for the Largest human image of a country or continent, before a day of sporting events at Eton Dorney, to celebrate 15 years of swimming, cycling and running for Afrika Tikkun. €1 million was raised at the event.
Over 2,000 people joined us for a weekend of celebrating and fundraising. The event began on Friday with a Guinness World Records attempt with 811 people wearing red t-shirts to form the largest human image of a country or continent - naturally, we chose Africa.
After succeeding in the attempt, Guinness World Records Adjudicator Sofia Greenacre declared Belron as “Officially Amazing”. Bands from Belron business units then showcased their talent to their colleagues and family and friends.
Saturday began with a welcome from Gary Lubner and cheque presentations from each country to our visitors from Afrika Tikkun. Due to the hard work and fundraising in all countries, the cheques came to a phenomenal €1 million. The funds will help Afrika Tikkun continue its work investing in education, health, and social services for young people and their families through its community centres of excellence and strategic partnerships.
Over 1,600 people from 26 countries swam, cycled, walked and ran to the finishing line. Almost a third of which were participating in the event for the first time. Due to visa issues the Russian competitors were unable to travel to the UK but joined us virtually with a run in Moscow making the country count 27 in total.
The Spirit of Belron Challenge comprises of activities all over the world in support of charitable causes and local community organisations. The Spirit of Belron Challenge event takes place every September in Windsor, UK and sees employees, families, and business partners from the Belron businesses coming together to take part in sporting events and raise money for our global charity, Afrika Tikkun.
