When Tim Tanis first started with Safelite, he was issued a challenge: overhaul the current pay-for-performance plan for technicians. Tim started by thoroughly researching the existing program to understand what worked and what didn’t. But it wasn’t only about compensation. The goal was to determine the right balance between technician motivation, performance and company objectives; something that met the needs of our people as well as the needs of our business. In order to drive desired behaviours and recognise our technicians’ skill levels, Tim developed career levels for technicians to realise career growth and advancement.
Tim went well beyond the scope of his role by working with the Operations team to develop better methods for measuring the very metrics we wanted to incentivise, i.e. how to fairly measure quality, how to help leaders manage overtime and more to help bring the programme to life in the most effective way. On top of that, Tim partnered with the Technology team to develop an app which would put technicians’ performance and metrics at their fingertips. This innovative approach put our technicians in the driver’s seat in terms of their own pay and performance. The new programme, TechVantage, officially launched in January 2017.
